Welcome Back!

On behalf of the staff and administration of Washburn Rural High School, I am excited to extend to you our best wishes for a productive and exciting new school year. Let me assure you that the educational opportunities for students at WRHS are excellent, both by reputation and by the measured accomplishments of our students.

We enjoy one of the best reputations of any public high school in the city of Topeka! Last year, we met the Kansas State Department of Education's Standard of Excellence in Reading and Mathematics on the Kansas State Assessments. Additionally, we produced five National Merit finalist and seven National Merit Commended Students!

As you also know our athletic and activities programs continue to be among the best in the State. Last year alone, we can look to State Tournament appearances in Scholars Bowl (State Champs for the 3rd straight year!), Volleyball (State Champs), Girls Basketball (3rd Place), Boys Soccer (State Champs), Girls Golf (2nd Place), Softball (4th Place), Girls Tennis (3rd Place), Wrestling, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys Swimming (7th Place), Girls Swimming (2nd Place) and Track! Our Orchestra, Band and Vocal Music programs received the highest ratings possible at State Large Group Music Festival in April and our Debate, Forensics and Drama programs continue to flourish. As a school community, we have much to be proud of and even more to be excited about!

In the coming year, I invite you to become a partner with us in your child's education, and in doing so, learn more about their "home away from home" - Washburn Rural High School. Attend their athletic events. Go to their concerts. Ask them about their school work. Talk with their teachers. Ask how you can volunteer in our building. By developing a deeper understanding of all that is available to your students at WRHS, you will help us to unlock the extraordinary potential within each one of them.
